In 1843, she translated an Italian paper on the engine and added extensive personal notes. In these notes, she published an algorithm designed to calculate Bernoulli numbers using the machine, making it the first published code intended for computer execution. Crucially, Lovelace realised the machine could manipulate symbols beyond basic arithmetic, anticipating modern general-purpose computing, digital music synthesis, and artificial intelligence by more than a century.

Her legacy is celebrated annually on Ada Lovelace Day in October.
