Iglu – Diana Tsachidou, Software Engineer

Diana Tsachidou We recently interviewed Diana Tsachidou, Software Engineer at Iglu on her thoughts and experience on Women in Tech.

  1. What does your job role involve?

My role involves writing new functionality, maintaining the existing code, working with my team to deliver high quality solutions.

  1. What made you choose a career in technology?

While I was choosing my career I knew that the there is a huge variety and I could work in different industries doing that I love. I really liked the creativity and the fact that things are changing rapidly give me the opportunity to update my skills. Also people have so many ideas but as software engineer I can figure out how to make those ideas work, this is really exiting. At the end it is a good paid work.

  1. Did you study an IT or technology related subject at A-Level or University?

Yes I have studied at the University of Macedonia, in Greece, for 4 years Applied Informatics. Also I have done a year of master on Computer science at the Open University of Patra.

  1. Did you get any work experience in IT or technology before this role?

Yes, I had 7 years of experience as a full stack software engineer.

  1. Do you think there is a lack of females in the IT and tech sector?

Definitely there is a lack of female in the IT and tech sector.

  1. Do you find there is a stereotype that a career in IT or technology is just for men?

I could say yes there is a stereotype that this is mostly a men sector also that it is a boring job to do.

  1. What would entice women to study technology related courses?

Getting more open mind, there are no men and women jobs. Also find out a bit more about how many sections are on IT sector and what they possible can do. It’s a well-paid sector and there will be always a high demand on this sector as everything nowadays is related to the technology and using the technology.

  1. Are there barriers when it comes to women getting into tech?

We are putting the barriers ourselves, so we can remove them also. Yes we have to prove that we can do our job well as the men usually underestimate us but after some point this stops in my personal experience.

  1. How could we encourage more women to start a career in tech?

You can find a job quite easier in this section with good salary. However is doing this job needs to love it then everything is easy.

  1. What advice would you give young women today at the start of their career?

Pick a job that will make you happy, but do not forget that you will do it to leave also, so if there is no jobs at this section keep it as a hobby and go for the next one.
