We know that diversity is important for successful innovation, and that is why we are committed to empowering women in technology and data roles. Our inclusive culture ensures you willhave the support, resources, and opportunities to thrive. Initiatives like Women in Digital, Diversity in Data Networks, and mentoring programmes provide a strong foundation for you to grow and make an impact. The Government Digital Service has also created the AI Accelerator Programme for upskilling some data scientists.
We also offer internship programmes to develop civil servants’ skills and create pathways for individuals from underrepresented communities to progress and thrive. One example is the 2024 Interns initiative that provides access to opportunities for diverse talent. We also partner with other government departments to collectively recruit and promote gender and ethnic diversity in the tech field. The Civil Service Care Leavers Internship Scheme offers care leavers an 18-month paid job role in a central government department or agency.
Our commitment to inclusion has previously been recognised with HMRC being awarded the Best Public Sector Employer in Women in Tech Employer Awards 2022. We are continually working to cultivate a more inclusive and diverse environment in the government and we are always exploring new and innovative ways to strengthen our diversity and inclusion strategy.

“The Civil Service is happy to make reasonable adjustments. For example, at interview, I was asked in what format I would like the interview questions. I do not use Braille and use the same laptop as everyone else, but equipped with a speech synthesizer that ‘reads’ text on the screen.”
